DW: The Underwater Menace

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 5th adventure of the 4th season of Doctor Who ‘The Underwater Menace’. Sadly there is half of the episodes missing. They recreated the first and fourth episode. Sadly not like the others with animation but just with photographs. If I had realized it I am not sure I would’ve still bought it. The picture give us not a real picture of the episode.

The first episode

Everyone who follows this blog knows that I love radio plays. Also I have Nick Briggs in my ear that he did this when he was young, just record the audio and than listen to it. Think it can be good. Maybe I don’t like it because the first episode was just bad. I really liked the start where Polly plays this little game with the other. ‘Let’s guess where and when we are.’ Like always that is what I love the most about Doctor Who are these little scenes between them. But after that most of the episode Polly is just screaming. In the three adventures she seemed a lot different. She start a discussion with a cybermen. But here he just seems to scream and being frightend.

New Companion

The second and third episode are … crazy. But it is also fun. The Doctor and the others got into costums and do a little roleplay to capture the mad scientist. Yep you read right. They land on Atlantis. The people there believe that a scientist can make Atlantis rise again. This scientist things it is a good idea to destroy the whole world. It is fun to see the four of the interact with each other. The best thing are the comments of the Doctor. There is something else new in this episodes. Finally Jamie is here. Jamie is diffently one of my favorites. They met him in ‘The Highlanders’ and he will develope are really great relationship with the Doctor. Jamie is the first companin that came from the past and he takes the time travel really well.

DW: Power of the Daleks

Hey Guys,

welcome to ‘Power of the Daleks’. It is the first adventure with the second Doctor and the 3rd adventure of the 4th season of Doctor Who. After the Doctor met before his death the cybermen, the first enemies he meet are the Daleks. Sadly all 6 episodes are missing. So they had reanimate all of them. The Daleks look great. But the animation itself is not really good. The motions are looking wrong and every character looks like they hate the world and want to kill everyone.

The earth future

Vulcan is a colony of the earth. The dating is difficult. In the story itself is no date given but in the trailer it is said 2020. Since none of the people knew what a Dalek is it has to be before ‘The Daleks Invasion of earth‘ which is in 2165. Maybe it just feels so wrong because we see it from our eyes.

Daleks and a murder

The Doctor is a little… he still is trying to find who he is now. Polly and Ben also have to find out how to deal with all this. When the arrived the Doctor finds a dead person and got attack. The Doctor is acting as if he has that dead person and takes the role to find out what is going on. The humans are working on capsule with three Daleks in it. The Daleks are out of Power and the people have nothing better to do than to give them power again. Even when the Doctor warned them.

DW: The Tenth Planet – rewatch

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 2nd adventure of the 4th season of Doctor Who ‘The Tenth Planet’. The first Doctor is traveling with Polly and Ben. The 3rd season had a lot differnet Companions but in 4th season we got the biggest change. What actually for as makes Doctor Who what it is today. Willam Hartnells Doctor died and regenarted. ‘The Tenth Planet’ is the last adventure with the first Doctor. Polly and Ben will stay almost the whole season.
The story takes place in 1986 in Antartica and introduced another long lived enemy of the Doctor the Cybermen.

Mondas

The history of Mondas. Earth twin brother that drifted away. The story of the cybermen is not really different to the story of Daleks. There are a few mayor difference. The cybermen bringen Mondas back in our solar system to get the energie from earth. Pure survivle with no understanding for life or compassion. Polly tries to talk sense into the cybermen. That is something not many companions would do.

Polly and Ben saving the day

Sadly the Doctor don’t have much screen time. William Hartnell was ad bad health and has absend from most of the adventure. But so everything is up to Polly and Ben. There is no Doctor telling them what to do. They have to make the decissions on their own. They handle themself has good as the Doctor by messing everything up and get captured before they get out of there alive.

Reanimation

The last episode is sadly lost. But the reanimation of the episode is one of the better ones. It is detailed and you can see the typical emotions of our heros on their faces. Also it kinda suits the emotionless cybermen. I am more than happy that they did reanimated this. I love the story and it is such a important story for the Doctor Who we know and love.

DW: The War Machines – rewatch

Hey Guys,

welcome the last adventure of the 3rd Season of Doctor Who ‘The War Machines’. Steven already left the TARDIS so the Doctor is traveling with Dodo. Dodo seems even through all she been through was capable of saving her joyful self. But the Doctor is not traveling long like this. We get introduced to Polly and Ben. I really love these two.
It takes place in July 1966 in London.

WOTAN

WOTAN is a computer who know everything even what TARDIS means and can think on his own. Something we got a lot of movies and series about. The machine deciding to take over the world from the humans. WOTAN get his helpers by hypnosis and let the human work for their own destruction. Also the computer seems to know about the Intelligence of the Doctor.

Ben and Polly

I really loved them from the first moment. She has kind soul. She cares about people and feels responsible from them. But she is also a very happy person. Polly likes fun and humor. Friendship means a lot to her. Even when she does know Ben for like two days, she cares and would not betray him. Ben is a little more… sullen? He is responsible and realize very fast when a situation turns dangerous. But he also tries to help and don’t let anyone behind.

A good end

This adventure changes a lot. We not just get new companions. The Doctor is taking sides and got involved on his own will. When we started Doctor Who the Doctor didn’t get involved. He just get himself into problems and tries to get out alive. Th Doctor don’t save people, he didn’t care about them. His travels with Barbara and Ian changed him.
Now we have a Doctor that actually try to save people and get’s involved in things. So this is a great way to end the 3rd Season because the 4th season with the 2nd Doctor. He will always get involved.

DW: Twice upon a time

Hey Guys,

i finally watched the Christmas Special of Doctor Who – Twice upon a Time. There are many reason that i didn’t watched it before. At first i just forgot my Laptop so i could watch at my parents. Than a friend wrote me that her friend watched and she said that it was full of misogynist jokes. So i just didn’t watch it. Also i had alot of fears about this story and Moffats made them all real.

My favorite Doctor

Truth be told when i got be asked who my favorite Doctor is i still say it is the Tenth Doctor but i love the first one. He was soo different and grumpy and old. He was just not nice. Hartnell was perfect in this role and i was really afraid of what Moffats will do to him. First i think the Actor David Bradley did a really good job. But the way he has written… oh my god… now i hate the first Doctor. In this christmas special he is an misogynist asshole… the jokes are funny. The words ‘young lady’ feel like a … i am missing the word…

The first Doctor was an grumpy old man. Yes but he never talked to Barbara that way. He never talked to Polly – in the episode i could watch – like that. He never talked to Vicki like that. The young lady was mostly for Susan – his granddaugther – when she didn’t do what he says. Was he overprotect of her and sometimes didn’t take her serious. Yes, but this had many reason one is that refused to see that she has grown up. For him she will was be his little granddaugther.

Regeneration

The next think i hate is the Regeneration… the first one didn’t refused to regenerate. He accepted his fate. He knew he was going to die. He died because of old age. He was ready and Moffats just takes that from him.

That Twelfth doesn’t want to regenerate is okay. That i can live with. Than there is this nameless Captain that get involved in all that. And i just liked the idea that this captain was just some guy. At some point the first Doctor asked ‘why he so important’ and the answer was every is important to someone and i really liked this. But than in the end… he isn’t just one random guy. No he is the grandfather of one of the most important person in the Doctors life. Someone that new so many of regenerations and were so good friends… no random here… of course not.

Story with an anticlimax

The story was really weak. I saw the twist with Bill from start and i hate the idea of Testimony. The only thing i liked about it was that there was no evil master plan… i missed this. But Testimony can bring everyone and i really dislike that. We are more than memories. Sometimes you just has to let go of people. It is hard, but YOU have the memories about them. There is no need to bring them all back like that. But yeah we cheated death again… and we could bring back Clara… and Bill. Don’t get me wrong i love Clara and i love it when they bring people back like memories or they met again…

But i can live with the story and i can live with Testimony. Also i can live that Bill and Clara were back for the goodbye of the twelfth Doctor.

Unnessassary

What is way harder to live with is the whole unnessassary bunch of stuff… like Rusty… it so doesn’t make sense. There was so much more but i forget about it while i was writing this stuff… but in the end it doesn’t matter. I really, really dislike this christmas special… oh yeah Polly and Ben were unnessassary too… i don’t mean the original part. I mean the three seconds with new actor who looks totally unreal? Like they are wearing really bad wigs…

So yeah back to what i was saying in the end i am just happy that is over. I wasn’t a big fan of the the Doctor is a woman idea. But i am so ready for it now. She is a great actor and i can’t wait to see what Chibnall is doing with it. Maybe… Doctor will really become one of favorite shows again…

DW: Ten Little Aliens

Ten little Aliens is a doctor who book from the ‘Past Doctor Adventure‘-Serie. It got reprint for the 50th Anniversary Collection.

The book featured the first Doctor (William Hartnell) and his companions Polly and Ben. Many of the adventures of this three are partially or complete missing. So it is a good thing to have some action with these characters.

I am sorry i think for a real critic i need to read it again. But what i can tell us is:

At first i needed a little time to get the story of the other ‘characters’ of the Story. But there are a few really interessting people and they have a real role. The interaction with Polly and Ben or the Doctor are really good and entertaining. Also the book is kinda sad, it has some heavy staff in it ( as far as i remember). It was a really interessting book. It was good to read with well written characters.

Just one thing i didn’t like it was how Ben interacted with Polly in a few scenes. I don’t know if this is his charcter and i just don’t like that part of him or it was the writer.
