Torchwood – The Death of Captain Jack

Hey Guys,

welcome back to the fourth season of Big Finish Torchwood and the first adventure ‘The Death of Captain Jack’. It is a story with Jack Harkness and John Hart. I had really high expectations because John Hart. I love this character and the episode are always fun. So this adventure could also be named ‘The many times John and Jack had sex’.

Dynamic

The important thing when John Hart was in an episode of the dynamic between him and Jack. This love/hate relationship. The friendship and the jealousy between them. They just cant without each other and definitely can’t with each other. This was what Big Finish got across perfectly. They are so similar in many ways and so different in other ways. This dynamic between when you never know if the will save or kill each other. That is so amazing about the John Hart character you never knew which side he will choose – except his own.

Changing History

The Story is about the relationship between John and Jack – what makes it really amazing himself. But it is also a story about John taking things, changing things in History. He is breaking all the rules of time traveling. He is marrying the queen and that are just a few of the changes he makes. Almost everyone has a short role in this. I doesn’t want to say more because you need to listen to this story.

Listing or not

Definitely listing to it! It is a great story. It doesn’t count to the best story and will not make it to my favorite list but it is still amazing. Also it brings John Hart back what is amazing on his own. I missed John Hart. It is a great start in a really great season. Because there are amazing team ups already planned. I can’t wait for the next one with Owen Harper and Ianto Jones.

Children of the Whales

Hey Guys,

welcome to the new Netflix Anime ‘Children of the Whales’. When I started watching this series I didn’t know anything about it. For course I looked it up afterwards. There is a manga out already. It is called ‘Kujira no Kora wa Sajō ni Utau’ in Japan. VIZ media published it in America under the name ‘Children of the Whales’. The manga has 10 Volumes and is still going on. The Anime as 12 episodes and it seems that there will be two OVAs. I haven’t heard anything about a second season so far.
What I don’t is how much the first season covers of the manga. No clue.

A new world

The drawings are beautiful. I really love the way the anime looks. So beautiful. Like most fantasy stories this play is in world we don’t know. A world also our characters don’t know. The story takes place on a small island – this is not totally correct, but you will see when you watch the anime. It looks peaceful but also you get the feeling that something isn’t right there. The way the island is ruled is… wrong. Alone in the way the society is built is so much potential for problems and good stories.
So it is not really a surprise that my favorite character is the one that questioned all this stuff.

There is war out there

Of course the ‘peace’ get destroyed after they found a girl on one deserted island. They got attacked by soldiers. The Girl is the only one that knows what is really going on. Again in the society the girl lived in is so much potential for great stories. The whole series is full of potential great stories. But it stays… flat is not the right word.
The way they show the war and the meanings deaths. It is really great and you actually are so sad about the people you see dying and dying. You see the characters struggle with it. I love that part. I also love the inside of the main characters when people close to them die.
It is beautiful done.

Mysteries Nose (I didn’t found anywhere this is spelled)

I think the mystery stuff they have surrounding the islands. Is good and has a lot potential. I doesn’t want to say more about what is behind it, because I don’t want to spoiler the story. But I think that this stuff came to short and even shorter what it means to the characters. The secrets they find out in this season changes everything the characters believed in. This is not a little secret which doesn’t involve them. This secrets involve them, they are part of the secret.
They had few scenes were they actually shows exactly this but it is to short and to fast.

Watching or not

It is beautiful to look at. The characters are good and the story has a lot of potential. There can be great and amazing stories in it. Sadly in this season the for me interesting problems came way to short. But I hope that the two OVAs or a second season will take this problematic and make a great story out of it. So yeah… watch it – I think XP

DW: 1963: The Assassination Games

Hey Guys,

welcome to the third part ‘The Assassination Games’ of the 1963 adventure that are celebration of the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who in the main range. The story is playing in 1963 in London. The seventh Doctor and Ace are going undercover. Also ‘The Assassination Games’ features the group Counter-Measures. The first appearance of the group was in the episode ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’ from the 25th season of the Doctor Who TV Series.

Not much Doctor

The first two episodes have not much of the Doctor and Ace in it. We mostly hear the story from the sight of Captain Gilmore the chef of Counter-Measures, which still trying to find founders for the group. The Doctor is undercover as an independent MP on a platform of nuclear disarmament and Ace as a maid in a wealthy family. Where she met Rachel the other part of the Counter-Measures or better an Ex-Counter-Measures Member.

Conspiracy

Ace and Rachel sadly doesn’t have such a big part. The most story we follow Gilmore and the Doctor, which try to find out what is behind the assassination. There are a lot of things that don’t at up, this why the good into it. There is a little time circle in it but itisn’t mentioned any further. I always like to think about how this circles start or end. The Doctor and Ace find a book writen by Captain Gilmore about the events in 1963.
I doesn’t want to tell more about it. The group the Doctor encounters here as an enemy is featured in others stories. So we will see more about them.

Listen or not

Like I said at the start ‘The Assassination Game’ is third part of the ‘1963 audio serie’. It can be that the other two stories (Fanfare for the Common man with the fifth Doctor and Nyssa; The Space Race with the sixth Doctor and Peri) are in some way connected to this story. I questioned all my source but it seems that they are only connected by the year they play in. So it should okay to just listen to this story.

But back the question. It is a story where Ace is traveling alone with the Doctor and she is a character I never got a real grip on. When she starts traveling with the Doctor and Hex I got a better access to her character.
I also wasn’t a fan the group Counter-Measures in ‘Remembrance of the Daleks’. The character I start liking is Rachel.

So yeah the story is good. But it is not mine. This isn’t a story I can get lost in. So I really didn’t need it but if you like Counter-Measures or Ace than this is good story for you.

Beijing – Peking Duck

Hey Guys,

i am sorry that this took me so long to write about one of the most amazing meal I had in Beijing – Peking Duck. obviously we had to eat Peking Duck in Peking. There is no way around it. There are many restaurants were you can eat it. We were in one at the top of shopping center. It was a really nice restaurant.

The waiting

The first thing we learnt was that it is not easy to get a table. When we came there you, you take your place in the queue and wait your turn to get your waiting number. Is it your turn you say how many people you are and then you get a number and then you have to wait around until your number is called. Than you get a table. This was a first for me to get a waiting number when I wanted to eat something. I actually don’t remember how long we waited for table but it was definitely more than a half of hour.

The Dishes

We always ordered four different dishes and eat from all of them. Here we ordered a half Peking duck and egg-rice with shred duck, than something like pancakes with a filling we don’t know and something else where we don’t know what it was. All the dishes were very delicious. All the dishes get serve at the same time except for the Peking duck. The Peking duck came an hour after we ordered.

The duck itself got cut direct on our table. You can watch them and you get very little of what the meat. Than came the stuff that I didn’t know about. All stuff you need to eat Peking duck. We got melon, onions and cucumber. Also we sugar, sesame sauce and at last we got really thin flatbread. When I search for it in the web I always find crepes as the flatbread.

The duck in the combination of all these ingredients tasted amazing. Now I really want to eat Peking duck again.

DW: Landbound

Hey Guys,

welcome to the Short Trip Landbound. It is a story in the 7th season of the Short Trips that Big Finish produced as special free release. The story has two parts. The first part plays directly after the episode ‘Doctor Who and the Silurians’ of the 7th season of Doctor Who. It doesn’t deal with what happened in the episode like on of my favorite stories does (CC: Old Soldier). The second part plays after the episode ‘Green Death’ of the 10th season. So the Doctor has no Companion with him in both parts.

Meeting related soul

Like I said before the story is not about what happened the Silurians. But it still happens directly after it. The Doctor is so angry with the Brig and just drives away. This is where the story starts the Doctor meets here a related soul. After he helped in an unsightly situation he get an invitation for a drink. That is what happens they just start talking about their stories. About losing their way to travel to see the world. They both are souls that need to move all the time and both lost what they loved.

Dealing with exil

We all know that the exile was really painful for the Doctor. The way he can’t move, bound the land. For me it is like this man is helping the Doctor do deal with this situation. When in the second the Doctor tries to help him. The story is about not giving up, to fight for what love.

Listing or not

First of all of course go listen to it because it is for free. Second it is a good story. I am not a big fan of third Doctor. He things so highly of himself. But I love the exile stuff and the UNIT family. So the story with just the third doctor has it harder than other stories to excite me. But it is good story and I like the Doctor in it.
Yeah it never be favorite story because Rise and Fall is just so amazing.

DW: Forever Fallen

Hey Guys,

welcome to the Short Trip Forever Fallen. It is a story in the 6th season of the Short Trips that Big Finish produced as special free release. The 7th Doctor and Ace are visiting Elysium 7 to help a man through his life. It seems that Elysium 7 is mentioned in this story for the first time. It is impossible to say in which year the events take place. I really like the Short Trips. Rise and Fall is one of my favorite story.

Good intentations

This short Trip is a slow story. It is about a man who wanted to remove free will on Elysium 7. The Doctor is convincing him to don’t do it. After the first encounter the Doctor and the man are meeting one time every year. It are just a few minutes we get every year. Just short glimpses of his life. This glimpses are painting a clear picture of what his life is in the moment.
It is really good. I don’t want to say too much.

Just go and download this great story on Big Finish (here) and listen to it, it just takes you a half hour.
