Lethbridge-Stewart: Mutually Assured Domination

Hey Guys,

I finally came round to read the fourth adventure of Lethbridge-Stewart ‘Mutually Assured Domination’. Yeah I know I get really confused with the order of the books. This book takes places after ‘Beast of Fang Rock‘ and before ‘Moon Blink‘. This time Lethbridge-Stewart is facing the Dominators which we know from Doctor Who ‘The Dominators’ with the Second Doctor, Jamie and Zoe.

Old acquaintance

In this adventure our Brig works with an old acquaintance that we also know from Doctor Who ‘The Web of Fear’. The Brig doesn’t have a good opinion about the journalist Harlod Chorley. But Chorley stumbles over a few coincidences that all seems to conact to Dominex.
I really like the dynamic between Chorley and Lethbridge-Stewart. The gone both through the same together and handle it really differently. I kinda hope to find them working together more often. Sadly Bill Bishop at in this adventure a really small role.

Dominex

Dominex Industries is a nuclear waste firm that promise cheap energy. People in high places are blended by this promise and make it really hard for the Brig to act against them. The story itself is not one of my favorites. But I love the characters and how the interact with each other. I love to see the Brigs calling friends that are ready to fight with him without much question asked. They are great characters and I love how the old chaps are ready to follow our young Lethbridge-Stewart.

A win

Finally we are at the point were Lethbridge-Stewart is official starting to built UNIT. He is choosing his team and I am real love to meet all this characters again. I already love his team so much. So yeah I will start read the next book as soon as possible. Hopefully I will read the right one next.

DW: Zagreus

Hey Guys,

welcome the 50th adventure of the Big Finish Main Range – Zagreus. This story is set directly after the adventure Neverland, which means this adventure is with Charley and the eighth Doctor. It is an adventure to celebrate the 40th birthday of Doctor Who. It is 4 hours long and so lot longer than the other stories. Another special part is that all the companions that worked for Big Finish are playing in the story but most have a different part than we know.

Special Guest

It is lovely to have Romana II in the story again. After Neverland she thought the Doctor and Charley are dead. But she finds out that she was wrong. Leela brings her a message from Rassalon and they start to travel to the Dark Tower. It is the first time Leela and Romana meet and the start of great friendship. But I am really annoyed how they adresse Leela in the story – Savege. Even when I never was a great fan of Leela and the fourth Doctor but she is a great Companion. She is intellegent and lovely.

The Brig is back

Or is he. The Brig has a really big role in this story. But he is not really the Brig. The TARDIS – or a part of the TARDIS – takes the shape of the Brig to help Charley to find out what is going and how they can help the Doctor. They live through certain parts of history that have something to do with the Divergence.

Am I Zagreus

The Doctor is going crazy. The Anti-Time in his body forms the personality of the Zagreus. Zagreus and the Doctor are fighting for the upper hand and try to find out what is going on in the TARDIS. The story is quite confusing and you slowy unwrapping what is going on in this story. I think there is a lot going on in this story. It is about what the differents between love and friendship. It is about the pain about having the feeling to be left alone.

Listing or not

Zagreus is a good story that explains everything that was unclear about the overcasting story. The end set us up for new adventure in another Universe. It is lovely to hear all the familar voices and who they play with it. I like the theme friendship and what it means to the Doctor and the TARDIS. Because most part of the story are about these two. In the last part I am annoyed by Charley. I hate it when you can do something but you start judging others doing the same. But yeah go and listen to it.

Lethbridge-Stewart: Moon Blink

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 5th adventure of the Lethbridge-Stewart Series ‘Moon Blink’. Again I got confused with what I book I have to read next. Normally you would read ‘Mutually Assured Domination’ before ‘Moon Blink’. Like the other adventures this is about Lethbridge-Stewart with Anne and Bill Bishop. For a Lethbridge-Stewart Series it has way to little of our future Brig in it. It is an adventure of Anne and Bill.

Good and Bad Aliens

This story is about the space race. Just that the space race that we could witness isn’t the real one going on. Americans and Russian has already a base on moon and found there an alien life form. As we all can imagine it doesn’t go very well. It gets really fast clear that the bad guys in this novel are not the aliens. It is the human race. So Anne and the Brig has to deal with good aliens and bad humans.

Baby Alarm

An old friend of Anne is coming to town and asked her for help. She ran from scientist with an alien baby. At Anne’s she involves a lot of people. Like she called Bill – why ever she would call Bill when she just knew him from the tellings of Anne. Also she brings Sally in what actually doesn’t really make much sense – even less when she as no role in this adventure.
I am a little let down be this book. It seems rather easy to care for an alien baby which don’t get anything to eat and nobody wonders that he didn’t need any thing to eat? There is so much in that goes unattended. Which is really sad.
But apart from that the story is rather nice. I really like Bill and we see more of the developing relationship between Anne and Bill.

Military

In the last part of the book when Anne and Lethbridge-Stewart finally work together, Anne gets on my nerves. She worked a lot with the Brig at this point she should know him a little. But she is judging him so much from thoughts she had herself in the very same book. Also the way she handled herself when they followed the bad guy to the show down. I am not a big fan of military either. But she is acting so headless and makes the situation never better. They are three people against a freaking group! They have to think things through. The way she is angry at him for not reacting… stop it. He is just trying to get everyone out alive. That she doesn’t seems to get that is so annoying. Most of all because before she always wanted him at his side and always that he could help them and then he does but it is not good enough for her.

DW: Minuet in Hell

Hey Guys,
welcome to the 19th adventure of the Big Finish Main Range ‘Minuet in Hell’. It is another story with Charley and the eighth Doctor. It is also a story were Lethbridge-Stewart plays a role. This is mostly a good indication for a good story. But someone on tumblr told me that this story is not one of the better once and that is not so wrong.

The story takes place in 2003 Malebolgia, USA. Malebolgia is the newest state of America. Lethbridge-Stewart is send there to investigate what is going on in this state. The Brig is already in retirement but still does sometimes a few jobs for them. Because he can’t just sit at home.

Bit from everything

We have three big story elements. One is like I already said Lethbridge-Stewart. He is investigating the facility that claims to heal mental illness. We all know that there of course has something behind it. I like this storyline. The Brig on his own is amazing and just his reactions at the answers of his bosses are fun.

Prostitute

Charley is the other big part of the story. She doesn’t know who she is or where she is. But she not just lost her memories, she also get captured and used as a prostitute. That is not totally right. Thanks god she didn’t good touched that way or before it comes to something like that, someone else is helping her out. Someone who seems to be a demon hunter.

At last

The last part is of course about the Doctor. The Doctor is in a similar situation as Charley. He forgot who he was and got captured and held in the place for the mental illness. With not knowing who he is, the escape seems more difficult like this.

Listing or not

The story is really not that great. But they have amazing characters and it is always fun to see the Doctor and the Brig interact with each other. So even when the story is not that great. It is a must listen for me, because the Brig and the eighth Doctor are lovely together.

DW: The Spectre of Lanyon moor

Hey Guys,

welcome to a great adventure of Big Finish Main Range ‘The Spectre of Lanyon Moor’ with the Brigadier. I love him and I just need so much adventures with him. Also you could bring back Sergent Benton. But back to the topic at hand here. The Brig meets the sixth Doctor and Evelyn. obviously the story takes place on earth – to be precise in Lanyon moor in Cornwall. Since Evelyn calls a friend it has to be her time and it also plays ‘a few years’ after his retirement – so it has to be somewhere in the 2000.

Just a short notice I read

It seems that here we have a situation – which is not addressed in the adventure. The Brig must have met the sixth Doctor already. He meets him for the first time in Business Unusual (Book from the Past Doctor Adventures) in 1989. So since my source says that the sixth Doctor has to met Evelyn before Mel with who he travels in 1989 it has to be his first time meeting the Brig, when the Brig already had met him.

A mysterious murder and goblins

A mysterious death bring the Brig – who works sometime for UNIT in his free time (love that guy) – undercover to Lanyon moor. As the coincidence wants the Doctor and Evelyn are landing here to. It is almost always fun when the Doctor and the Brig meet.
This story is like always a good mix between mystery and funny. Just like I love it the most. Everything from everything.

Respect

I love that we actually see the Doctor collect information. He sent Evelyn to inform herself about the local history. This also means that Evelyn is doing a lot of stuff on her own in this adventure and she is definitely not a damsel in distress. She has a lot of action going on.
She kicks asses but also can faint after she witnessed something horrible. But also stand up so she can try to prevent it ever happen again.
That means also that the Brig and the Doctor are working together again. The friendship and respect between each other is one of my favorite thing.
In this story the Brig is actually voicing some of his opinions about the Doctor to someone else. I love to hear him talk like this and that he takes the Doctor really serious.

Listing or not

definitely go and listen to this adventure. Evelyn is a really amazing and strong character. It is always fun to listen to her. Also we got a lot Brig and Doctor friendship what is a really good reason to listing to it. The story is good. Nothing spectacular but good. A good old mystery about a murder goblin?!

Lethbridge-Stewart: The Shizoid Earth

Hey Guys,

after my little confusion i read now the second book of the serie Lethbridge-Stewart – The Schizoid Earth. Unlike the other two books it is not referring to classic Doctor Who story. It stands alone and plays without much surprise after the second book.

Confussion

The story is really confussing and i can’t tell what it is about. We have three main strands of plot. We have the Brig. Theoretically he finds a bomb that doesn’t detonated with a passenger – a dead professor Trevors. Now comes part that confuses me. Because the second strand is with Anne Trevors and Professor Trevor finding somewhere else a simular ‘bomb’ but before they can make tests they got called back to search for Lethbridge-Stewart.
The third strands is a reporter that also got asighned to find the Brig.

Problems over problems

This mystery ‘bombs’ are not the only thing that is going on. Soldiers from the past appier the present. These soldiers are not aware of that. They still things they are in war. All three groups met some of these soldiers. But there is still more. The Brig is having problems remembering things. Also there seems to be problems with the year they are in. Everything is really mysterious. You really don’t know what is going on. So the story is working good. But the biggest problem is that the parts with the Brig are the shortest until the middle of the book. After that we got alot more Lethbridge-Stewart and the book good alot more interessting from that point on.

Reading or not

If go through the first half of the book, the good really interessting, emontional, still confusing but the question gets answered and i really fall in love with the story. So yes totally worth reading.

Lethbridge-Stewart: Beast of Fang Rock

Hey Guys,

the Lethbridge-Stewart serie has confused me a little with the order of the books. I thought the whole time that the book ‘The Beast Of Fang Rock’ is the second volume but i wasn’t quite right. It is in truth the third book. So i didn’t get a lot of hints of the past of the Brig. But it is not really nessasary to understand this story.

This book is not as strong as the first book. It is has a nice flow but the story is not getting to me. I have to say that i wasn’t a big fan of the story ‘The Horror Of Fang Rock’ and also don’t remember much of it. What makes it a little harder to follow the events of the book and the persons.

They way to tell the story

The story has three different time zones. The first one is the present were the Brig and his team is working again together with Anne and also with Owaine Brigs Nephew. I like these two to interact and i hope the books will explore the relationship between them more.
The second zone is 1902. That are the events that take places when the Doctor is visiting Fang Rock. So there is not much story just hints for the Doctor and the episode.
The third zone is 1923. It explains who the story is connected. Also a lot of action is taking place there.
I can’t tell how well the book works around the story of the episode because i don’t remember much of it. But when i start my rewatch of Doctor Who i will try to look into it.

What it is about

There isn’t much to say about the story. If you know the episode you can think how the book is working. But for the others: Fang Rock seems to becursed. Ghosts are showing up and really suspicious lights were seen there in all three time zones. The Brig is still searching for evidence that there are alien threats out their and finds out that maybe other people know more than him.

Just another step closer to the Brig. It is feeling wrong to write about him as something else than the Brigadier. So i hope you don’t mind that i write about him as the Brig. Of course in the story he is not a Brigadier yet. In the story he is still a colonel.

DW: Lethbridge-Stewart – the forgotten son

Hey Guys,

here it comes the first book of the new serie Lethbridge-Stewart or the Havoc Files. Like the name says it is about Lethbridge-Stewart so what can go wrong?

What is it about

For everyone who didn’t heart about it yet. The serie plays after the events of ‘The Web of fear’. This is his way to becoming the Brigadier and building UNIT. Which is a lovely idea. The Brigadier is an amazing character and one of the most important character in the arc of the third Doctor. So war he is also with Sarah Jane Smith the one that has seen the most reincarnations of the Doctor. I don’t know rigth now if the sixth Doctor met the Brig but one to five and the seventh of met the Brig – and that is just the tv serie. To make a serie about the person who not just become a close friend to the Doctor but also his boss, is an amazing idea – yes i know i said that before and it will be not the last time. Because the Brig is one of my all time favorites.
So the first book took place right after ‘The Web of fear’. When the Doctor left the town was still a mass. They people left behind had to clean up after the incident. The Brig is the one that is responisble for the repopulation of London.

Old enemies

The first case has to do with the Great Intellegent and the past of the Brig (in this story he is just an colonell but he just call him always Brig or the Brigadier). Best thing about the book is not the story itself, which is be no means bad, but the best thing is that we got to know more about the Brig, about his past, his daily life and his fiancee.
The most negative about the book is the way it is written. This story as way to many perspectives. We have the Brig, a dead soldier, the Brigs mom, an old friend of the Brigadier and twins and you look through everyones eyes. Which is making us understand the person itself better but it is just to much for me.

But you got a good feeling for all the characters. You like or dislike them. But there isn’t a character that seems flat. And a few of the characters will cross the Brigs way many times.

Close to the serie?

What is good and on the same time not, is that they actually are very close to the New Who serie. So it is mentioned that the Great Intelligence is followed everywhere by procelin girl – Clara Oswald. But that also means that they took also his last salute to the doctor. Which I really hate because I want to forget that it ever happens. This is destroying cybermen and the Brigadier.

But everyone who love the Brigadier Lethbridge-Stewart should read that book.

UNIT: The Wasting

Hey Guys,
welcome to the final part of this UNIT serie. This is one of the weakest parts of the serie and even more as the showdown. But the weak points will be forgotten by the many fanservice.

Weak Story

The Story before was so good and now that all is out in the open, everything seems forgotten. It goes about a virius that never get mentioned before and the rescue of Colonel Wood. We got no really answer what has the real reason behing everything, the grand plan or how they did it. We got something totally new. But the virius storyline is just for fanservice. We don’t really searching for a solution. The Brig let search. We don’t have anything to do with it not the Brig or UNIT. But we got fanservice. The best fanserves ever is the Brig himself. He let forget alot of weak points just for being part in it. But also he is calling Sullivan and mentionend Benton and Mike. It is really fun to hear him in action again.

Get us a doctor

Sadly we don’t get ‘The Doctor’ in the story, but we got a doctor. David Tennant is playing Colonel Wood. I really love his voice. You hear that he has fun to play that role. Listen to him is making me forget a lot points, because he just can caught.

It is really fun to hear the Brig and the colonel Wood. All the mentions of old things is amazing but the story is really weak not perfect for a showdown and last part. It is to sad for so many good characters.

DW: Scales of Injustice

Hey Guys,
i started to read the Scales of Injustice of the Monster Collection. The Story was printed as a part of the ‘Missing Story’-Serie. It featured the 3rd doctor, Liz Shaw and UNIT, it takes place between the Storys ‘Inferno’ and the ‘Terror of the Autons’. AHistory is ordering it between ‘The Blue Tooth’ (Companion Chronicles #13) and ‘the Devilgoblins from Neptune’ (Past Doctor Adventure #1).

Liz Shaw

I always like Liz. She is a good person, competent and really intellegent. But also very controlled and seems often a little cold. She is much alike with the 3rd Doctor. This way never get with them. They really devoleped a conaction to each other. They were colleges and nothing more. So simular to open up. I never was sad that Liz left UNIT. This book is the last adventure from in UNIT. At the end of the book she left and i think that is best decision she made in her life. She is better than be an assitent for the Doctor. She wasted her potential at UNIT. For Liz is example of someone which becomes better without the Doctor, better by leaving the behind. She moved. She really likes him and they could have amazing friends, but they never were.

Positive Thinks

I love the way we get an inside in every important UNIT member. We get a inside in the Doctor, Liz and most importantlly in Mike, Benton and the Brig. We see a part his private life. We see how it breaks apart. This for me the most important part of the book and the reason i like it. Also i love how the describe the relationship between Benton and Brig. Benton is always standing on the sidelines and often he is totally for gotten. We see the Brig or Mike from times but so less something of Benton. He was there from the beginning. He is so loyal and a good character and he needs more appreachiation.

Story

This whole thing with C19 and the Glashouse and so one doesn’t make much sense to me. It was chaos and everyone was special, changed and the story doesn’t get me. So we have that whole conspiracy and Silurian in the mix. The Silurian Story was also not the newest or best. But i love the last part when Liz is with them. It showed us that some people are better and Liz is one of them. I love how the take this story to give Liz a reason to leave and do good in her own way. She doesn’t run away from aliens and the danger. She choose to help them another way, maybe not direct way but an indirect way.
