DW: The Company of Friends

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 123rd Big Finish Main Range Adventure ‘The Company of friends’. Here we have four stories with the eighth Doctor and four different companions. The first story is with Benny which takes place around 2609 (Ahistory) and fifty million years before. Ahistory puts the story in the 10th season of Benny. The second story is with Fitz and the third with Izzy. Izzy’s story takes place on 8th April 1988. The fourth story is with Mary Shelley and takes place in June 1816.

Benny’s Story

I think most people know who Bernice Summerfield is. She is an archaeologist and a companion of the seventh Doctor in the books. Later Big Finish made audio dramas around her. Here we get a short summary of her life. Even if you never heart of her you got a good grip of her. I like her. She is fun. In this story she is working for a woman who is searching for something. It turns out it is TARDIS key of the Doctors TARDIS.
The atmosphere is light and fun with a little action in it.

Fitz’s Story

Fitz is also a companion out of the books. He has a complicated story. I myself don’t fully understand because I just read the summary of his story. Ahistory hadn’t placed the story in time and there is no time given just the planet Entusso. This story is about the private Alien Device Incorporated that used the Doctor in their commercial. So the Doctor starts investigating. Like the story before it is a really light and fun atmosphere.

Izzy’s Story

Izzy is a companion from the comics. I never of her before. In this story she seems young, loud and having always something to say. She is kinda a geek. This story is about Izzy wanting to know what happened in the last volume of one of her comics, that just seem to have vanished from every place. The atmosphere is crazy? I think it is actually crazy. It has a lot of aliens in it and really special comic ‘heroes’. This is the story I like the less of all of them.
Also I really dislike the ending and I am totally the Doctor in this one… I really don’t understand her.

Mary’s Story

Mary Shelley is a companion that appears in a book and a few audio dramas. Here in this story we have her and a few of her friends to kill time. It is the first meeting of her and the Doctor. It is also a story about how Mary finds her idea to her book Frankenstein. What I like about the story and why I really want to listen to more stories with her is that she is a companion that really existed. This is the only story that is really dark. Mary is like the only light in this story.

Listing or not

The most stories of the eighth Doctor are dark and sad. This Doctor has so many scars on him…he has always that shadow over him. But in this stories we see a lighter, funnier Doctor. He is with people who are so fully of life and hope and optimism that makes him look not so troubled. So yeah differently go and listen to this.

DW: The Angel of Scutari

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 122nd Big Finish Main Range Adventure ‘The Angel of Scutari’ with the seventh Doctor, Ace and Hex. It plays for our friends directly after ‘The Enemy of the Daleks‘, where Hex questioned if he is ‘made’ for this. So the Doctor brings him to met Florence Nightingale. So the story takes place between 25th September to 19th November. This is a historical story and so all the dates are being giving to us in the story. Also we have the third part of ‘The Three Companions’.

Hex in his element

It is really nice to see him in his element. He not just is a nurse but he also loves his job. In Scutari he can help ‘simply’ with trying to hold everything kill. Doing the job that Florence Nightingale did. She was one of the first people who took the enviroment into account for the healing of the wounded in time for more people died in the hospital bed than on the battle field.

You shouldn’t meet your heros

That is what people say. It didn’t work out for the Doctor with meeting his heroes. I think that is always a problem because we forget that their more than their work. Hex got really flustered when he meets her and it is endearing. I really love this story who Hex is charming this people. In a month people learnt to trust and respect him. It is so good to see him like this. I also love that the Doctor know Hex so good and he got a lot better in helping people than he was with Ace.

A little confusing

The story is a little confusing. It has a lot of time jumps. So you really have to think about when what is happening. All three of them are on their own and we jump between their stories and times around. The Doctor is captured for treason and Ace got badly hurt and is in prison. So they all have to make their own way.

Listing or not

I love the story. You all know I love historical and this is no exception. It is good story that tells us a lot about the time and this war. We see how close they got even when they are not together. I love it when they show us a little more of the relationship between the Doctor and Hex. Most times we have the Doctor and Ace or Ace and Hex.

DW: Enemy of the Daleks

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 121st Big Finish Main Range Adventure ‘Enemy of the Daleks’ with the seventh Doctor and Ace and Hex. Ahistory is placing the story around 2560 during the Daleks Wars. This and the name of the story are promising us another Dalek Story. This story contains also the second part of ‘The Three Companions‘ were Polly tell the Brigadier a story about their adventures.

Welcome to war

This is a war story. Do I have to say more? The humans are fighting against the Daleks for years now. There is a desperation in them. They know the enemy, their the cruelty. A group of survivor of a Dalek attack flee to the planet Bliss, where they find a science base. All is set for a good and cruel war and action story spiced with war crimes.

Like the cybermen?

This is actually the first time that Hex encounters the Daleks. He thought that the cybermen were the worst the universe has to offer. Now he learns about the Daleks and it scars him. You all know that I love Hex and even more this whole combi of people. But Hex is different… he wants to see the world and loves adventure about he is no soldier and he is breaking by all the bad things he is witnessing. What I love so much about him is who he always tries to protect, to save people. How often do we see Companions standing up to Daleks to protect people he doesn’t even know?

Everyone in his element

Hex story part is about him being a nurse. The Doctor left him to look after the wounded and the patients that are infected by a ‘virus’.
Ace on the other hand is with the soldiers and can work with the big guns again.
That leaves the Doctor to deal with the scientist, the war crime and the question the Doctor has to answer in many incarnations. Is genocide something he can, shall and will do?

Listing or not

I like the story. War stories are always so dark and cruel and bloody… and this is no different… there is no real happy end. I am not such a great fan of these stories… but Big Finish always make it work and they are great. This particular works for me because of the combi of characters in the story. So yes listen to it. But you will not find humor in it or light conversation but it is totally worth it.

Doctor Who: We are the Daleks

.Hey Guys,

welcome to the 201st Big Finish Main Range Adventure ‘We are the Daleks’ with the seventh Doctor and Mel. The title promise us the Daleks. The takes place October 1987 in London and Bradford. The story will also take place at Sakro and Callico Nine. Callico Nine is a planet the Thals inhabited after leaving Sakro.

Everything like you left it

The Doctor and Mel visited home. He tell’s er that everything is like she left it except for the big skyscraper in form of Dalek. Both of them start investigating the situation by seperating. Mel get’s a job in this building and the Doctor is searching for information outside of the building.
This means that Mel and the Doctor don’t have really much screen time together.

Little confusing

The first episode is a little confusing. It jumps a little with the parts. This means that it jumps between scene with Mel and the Doctor and Mel working in the building. I had problems to put in the right direction. After like 10 minutes you got a picture of all the storylines that are going on. This is the moment when the confusion stops.

Daleks are always fun

It is no secret that I love the Daleks and the Mel and seventh Doctor compination. They are fun together. The way Mel interacts with the seventh is quiet different to sixth Doctor. The story has a nice pace. With all the politics in this story you could think that it is a slow story, but it isn’t. The story has a lot of actin scenes and doesn’t slow down. All this creates a good atmosphere and great story.
When you love Mel than you should listen to ‘We are the Daleks’. She has a lot of action and it is always fun to listen to her save the day.

Doctor Who: The Memory Bank and other Stories

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 217th adventure of Big Finish Main Range ‘The Memory Bank and other Stories’ with the fifth Doctor and Turlough. This story has 4 parts with differnet little stories. They have nothing incomen except the Doctor and Turlough.

The memory Bank

It is a little story about how important memories are. Turlough and the Doctor lands in the Memory Bank where people had secured their memories. When you got forgotten in this world you die that is why they have this Memory Bank and Turlough with his great luck becomes the new archivator.
This stories is really sad and we got a few memories of Turlough. We all know that he doesn’t like his past life, his memories. Not everything is a good memory.

The Last fairy tale

The Doctor and Turlough stumple over a little town that is waiting for a storyteller. Turlough things the discribtion looks like the Doctor and brings them in danger. This story is more fun. The Doctor Turlough snipping at each other and mysterious storyteller makes a light funny story.

Repeat Offender

The Doctor got a call for help and arrives in a flat with an anconces woman. When both of them try to find out what is going on. The wife of the woman comes home and calls the police. Before the Doctor can do anything he finds himself in trail.
The story is a little crime story. How got killed and by who. Or was there even a murder? I really like this story.

The Becoming

This is my favorite story of ‘The Memory Bank and other stories’. Turlough and the Doctor meeting a woman on her pass to become what she is ment to be. It is a kind of ritual and these two just making things complicated.
I like this story the must because I love stories where we see that Turlough cares so much for people. Most times he has this wall and seems to only care about himself… we all know that is not true. But this one of the stories where he doesn’t hide that he cares but still doesn’t to get involved.

DW: The Magic Mousetrap

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 120th Big Finish Main Range Adventure ‘The Magic Mousetrap’ with the seventh Doctor, Ace and Hex. The story takes place in 1926 in switzerland in the Hulbrook sanatorium. It seems like the Doctor has amnesia and he is on his own. Ace and Hex find themself in a very different position than most times.

Who pulls the strings

The Magic Mousetrap is one of these episode were you don’t what is actually going. We have a few people playing games to stay alive and we have the Doctor don’t remember anything. Than we have two rich people in the attic giving ‘orders’.
Actually I had a really hard time to realize that this woman voice is Ace. Hex voice was easier to recongnize.

This a story where it is really hard to write something without spoilering everything. It is quite a mess. It seems like only Ace and Hex kno whats going on. I definitly didn’t what was going on. Because there is so much happening and nothing logic to me.

In the end

They explain everything in the end and it makes sense. There is a lot in this story and it is fun to listen to the story to unravel. But for me it is a little to crazy. I like story but it is also a story I totally forget and will never be one of my favorites. But it still fun to listen to this little mystery. To listen to Ace and Hex which kinda like to play with the Doctor. Normally it is the other way around and it changes a little of the dynamic between them.

Side story

The 120th adventure comes also with a little side story – The three Companions. It is a little like the Companion Chronicles. This one are a letter conversation between Polly and Brigadier about the Doctor. I really like it and I really want to hear the other 11 parts of this story.

DW: The Raincloud Man

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 116th Big Finish Main Range Adventure ‘The Raincloud Man’ with Charley and the sixth Doctor. We also have a special guest and that would be DI Menzies. The story takes place after ‘The Condemned’ in 2008. It seems to be december because all the people are doing their Christmas shopping. So obviously we find ourself in Manchester again and the second part of the story takes place in Rio de Janeiro.

Switch places

DI Menzies built herself a amazing new reputation and also a network of informants. It is really lovely to see how she dealt with everything. This time when they met it is not the Doctor that is believed to be a murderer but Charley. One of Menzies informants – Kelsa -knew of her special situation with the Doctor and than when Menzies left them alone he ends up dead. Kelsa is an interesting character and I loved him the whole 5 minutes he is part of the story. I really would love to met him again sometime in his past.

Time Travelers

The Doctor is following a coin from the future to find the time traveler behind it. Of course it leads to something much bigger than this mystery time traveler. We got a dubious casino and different aliens who are all searching for someone. For who are they searching and are they all searching the same person? We follow mostly three different storylines of the story. Obviously the one from the Doctor and the one of Charley but also got DI Menzies and her story.

The new companion?

What I love about ‘The Raincloud Man’ is that we got a lot of DI Menzies action. She trusts the Doctor but doesn’t believe everything he tells her. She is searching for her own answer and I am sure that she would make a great companion material. Maybe someday we will see this. The three different storylines – it’s not the perfect word for it – make the story so good an interessting.

DW: Forty-Five

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 115th Big Finsih Main Range Adventure ‘Forty-Five’ with the the seventh Doctor with Ace and Hex. This story is actually for four differnet stories. We had adventure like that before for example Circular Time and 100. It should celebrated Forty-Five years of Doctor Who. So the number Forty-Five is playing a role in every story.

False God

The first story of Forty-Five takes place in 1902 in egypted. They met Howard Carter on his search fo the lost tomb of Userhat. The interessting part is that Hex is hearing a calling that none of the other can hear. What I really love is that this Doctor is not playing favorites.

Order of Simplicity

This story is taking place in the 3380 on the planet Sphere of Influence. There is a mysterious code that the Doctor should solve. But the problem is that everyone that reads this code gets infected by a virius that reduces your IQ to 45.

Casualties of War

The third story of Forty-Five takes place in 9th May 1945 in London the celebration of the end of the second world war. For Ace this is a special adventure because Ace and her mother grow up in this street – in the house next door.

The Word Lord

The last story takes place in the year 2045 in the second cold war that seems to lead to the state of affair seen in ‘Warriors of the Deep’. There is murder in a top secret base and the Doctor and his friends need to find the murder.

DW: Brotherhood of the Daleks

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 114th Big Finish Main Range Adventure ‘Brotherhood of the Daleks’ with the sixth Doctor and Charley. In the story itself is no actual date given, but with all the clues given in the story AHistory place it around 5426. Like the title says it is Dalek story but we also met again the race of the Thals – who found a new home on the planet Spiridon.

Secrets

Charley is really bad at keeping secrets and act not suspicious. She is so obvious. But it is still fun to listen to try to explain her knowledge. What I like the most about this is that even when the Doctor and Charley seem to be close – to be friend. There is still is thing between them. This in a way he trusts her and in a way he don’t. I don’t know. I just like relationship full opposites.
The story starts with these two making contact with a group of Thals. Something is off. One of the women seems to react to the words ‘blue box’ and Charlotte Pollard. Obviously the Thals know about the Doctor and the TARDIS but for them it is more like a fairy tale than real history.
The fun part is that there is a bigger reaction to the name Charlotte Pollard than to Blue Box. The Story has a few hints of an early story ‘Terror Firma‘ the last encounter form Charley and the Daleks.

What is real

It is quiet complicated to explain the story without spoiling too much. If you listen to this adventures when you do different things than maybe you should sit done and do nothing except listing. It is not so complicated but it has a lot layers. What is the truth and what is illusion. Are they really at Spiridon? Or where are they and what is really going on there. That is why I actually love this story. Maybe listen a second time to get what you missed.

DW: The Doomwood Curse

Hey Guys,

welcome to the 111st Big Finish Main Range Adventure ‘The Doomwood Curse’ with the sixth Doctor and Charley. The story takes place in the 1738 in England. It is a story about reality and fantasy. It is about the legendary highwayman Dick Turpin. In the Doctor Who universe he was bad criminal that got romanticized be the book ‘Rockwood’.

The dynamic

Something is really wrong in London 1738. The Doctor and Charley arrive there and something of. It is fun to hear Doctor trying to figure Charley out and still he already knows her enough to realize that something is wrong that she is acting off. It doesn’t end with Charley. All the people start acting weird. People dying of curses and sudden marriages will hold the Doctor on his heels. Everything turns overdramatic and overacted just like in an old romantic story.

Just to dramatic

The biggest problem with this is the overdramatic and overacting – even when it is totally intended to be like this. Thief that still from the rich to give it the poor. Falling in love with your sister that got kidnapped years ago. We kill everyone and we curses people. It is just not my kind of story. I love Charley but sometimes she goes on my nerves with overdramatic view of things and now she changed in this girl who is so overdramatic and naive.

Great Idea

I really like the idea of the story. It is just couldn’t it be a modern story? Okay have to admit it wouldn’t work so well with a modern story. All the part of the story fit to the idea behind it perfectly. Even when I don’t like these kinda of stories so much, it brings us great scenes between the Doctor and Charley and their evolving friendship.
